Puppy Vaccination and Wellness Guide at Dobbins Village Veterinary Hospital

Welcoming a puppy into your family is a special moment, and setting them up for lifelong health starts with strong preventive care. At Dobbins Village Veterinary Hospital, we help you protect your puppy with a thoughtful, customized vaccination plan that supports immune development, prevents serious disease, and sets the stage for a healthy life.

Vaccines are a key part of early wellness. They prepare your puppy’s immune system to recognize and fight disease before exposure ever occurs.

The Role of Vaccines in Puppy Health

Puppies are born with immature immune systems that cannot fully protect them on their own. During the first months of life, they are at greater risk for contagious illnesses that can spread quickly and have severe consequences. Vaccinations help train the immune system so your puppy can build protection safely and effectively.

Staying on a recommended vaccine schedule protects your puppy’s health and contributes to the wellbeing of other pets in the community.

Core Vaccinations All Puppies Should Receive

Core vaccines are considered essential because they protect against diseases that are common, contagious, and potentially life threatening.

DHPP (Distemper/Parvo Combination)

This vaccine protects against:

  • Distemper
  • Parvovirus
  • Adenovirus (canine hepatitis)
  • Parainfluenza
These illnesses can be severe in young puppies and spread easily without immunity.

Rabies

The rabies vaccine is required by Arizona law and protects against a fatal virus that affects the nervous system. Rabies vaccination is essential for your puppy’s safety and for public health.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through contaminated water and wildlife urine. It can affect both pets and humans, making vaccination an important consideration based on your puppy’s environment and exposure risk.

Lifestyle Vaccines for Additional Protection

Depending on your puppy’s daily activities and risk of exposure, additional vaccines may be recommended:

  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) for puppies that will attend daycare, grooming, boarding, or group training
  • Canine Influenza for dogs who interact frequently with other dogs
  • Lyme Disease Vaccine for puppies exposed to tick habitats or who travel to high-risk areas

Our veterinarians will help identify which optional vaccines make sense based on your puppy’s routine and lifestyle.

Typical Puppy Vaccination Schedule

Your puppy’s vaccination plan will be personalized, but many follow a schedule similar to this:

6 to 8 Weeks Old

  • Initial DHPP vaccine
  • Begin discussion of lifestyle vaccines

10 to 12 Weeks Old

  • DHPP booster
  • Continued optional vaccines if needed

14 to 16 Weeks Old

  • Final DHPP booster
  • Rabies vaccine
  • Completion of any remaining recommended vaccines

Completing this series before regular social activities such as dog parks, classes, or boarding helps ensure your puppy is protected before higher risk exposure.

Continuing Care After Puppy Vaccinations

After your puppy completes the initial vaccine series, ongoing wellness care typically includes:

  • Core vaccine boosters based on individual needs and veterinary recommendations
  • Rabies boosters required by law
  • Lifestyle vaccine boosters as needed based on continued exposure risk
  • Routine wellness exams to monitor growth, nutrition, dental health, and parasite prevention

Regular wellness visits allow our team to assess overall health, answer your questions, and adjust care plans as your puppy grows.

I have two Bernedoodles and haven’t been able to find a vet that we felt comfortable with. Yesterday my wife and I took our babies to a new veterinary hospital that just opened on the NW corner of baseline and 35th ave. Our experience at Dobbins Village Veterinary Hospital was excellent! The staff at this veterinary hospital was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The office was clean and the prices for their services were reasonable. Our pups have a new vet!
Two thumbs up, check them out.

I cannot say enough good things about this office and their staff. They took us in immediately after I called due to an emergency. (My dogs found sugar-free gum somehow and ate an entire package.) We were in/out within a couple hours and they were so kind and patient with my Aussie who has terrible anxiety. Even the woman at the front desk saw me struggling to wrangle my anxious Aussie and came out to help me get them inside. We will definitely be back under hopefully happier circumstances next time. Thank you, Dr. Ou and staff! You are wonderful!

We had a wonderful experience at the clinic! Dr. Ou and the entire team were thorough, professional, and communicated clearly every step of the way. Our dog’s dental cleaning was handled with great care, and there were no surprise costs. His teeth look fantastic, and we couldn’t be happier with the results! The extra drive to Laveen was worth the added effort!
